Methods of Mounting Soundproofing Materials

For people with home theaters or recording studios, the decision to invest in acoustical sound insulation is a no-brainer. However, when it comes time to mount the products, answers aren’t always quite as clear. Depending on your situation and the permanence of your treatment, there are multiple options for mounting sound materials in a way that makes sense for you.

For permanent applications, the easiest way to mount sound treatment and acoustical foam products is with spray adhesive. When liberally applied to a sound tile and the wall itself, it just takes a few seconds of compression to create a permanent bond. Lighter adhesive application on just the acoustical tile allows it to be carefully removed without damaging the foam, though residue may be left on the wall.

For individuals who don’t want to glue foam acoustic treatment to the walls or are still figuring out the best placement for new sound materials, long T-pins or tacks can be used and pushed through the material into the wall to hold them in place. Since most treatment products are light, like a foam mat sound barrier for instance, very few pins are needed; just enough to keep the product from sagging.

Lastly, to have sound treatment that can be moved around or set up in a temporary space, gluing a product to a substrate board allows it to be hung like a picture or even leaned against walls. Any of these methods can be used to create a sound acoustic space, no matter your situation.
