Your front door is one of the most important facets of your home. It is the first thing we see when we come and the last thing we see when we leave. It is also the first impression visitors get when they arrive. The look and more importantly the feel of your front door adds to the image of your home. A well-maintained, well-finished door gives a feeling of security and homeliness. When it comes to selecting a material for a door, wood is the first option for most. However there are some considerations when buying wooden those that you should be aware of.
Solid wooden doors were written off due to their propensity to warp and curl. This was especially problematic for entry doors. That is no longer a problem. Modern methods of using engineered wood cores to construct wooden doors have eliminated most warping and curling issues.
Wooden doors also require more maintenance. Maintenance might be slightly higher for exterior wood doors. However with just a few coats of paint or polyurethane, the door can be kept looking good for decades. It is an extra effort. But it is one that is worthwhile.
Choosing the right type is also important. You get pre-hung doors and slab doors. Slab doors are the ones that are sold without hinges and lockset boring. These are perfect to replace existing doors as the jamb and trim are already in place. Pre-hung doors come hinged with a frame. These are best for new construction.
These are just a few considerations when choosing to buy a wooden door.
