Weather Stripping Your Front Door

It’s important to weather strip your front doors on a regular basis. Replacing your weather stripping can help make your home more comfortable and reduce your heating and cooling costs. Over time, old weather stripping will lead to leaks in your doors, allowing air to come in and escape and forcing your HVAC system to work too hard.
If you are replacing the weather stripping on your door, you’ll need to use two different types of stripping: the bottom of the door requires door sweeps while the top and sides of the door need self-adhesive foam.
Start out by installing the self-adhesive foam. This is as simple as cutting out the right amount and applying it to the door’s moulding. But before you do this, you’ll want to make sure that you clean off the mouldings with soapy water. This will make sure that the foam adheres to the moulding properly. After you’ve measured and cut out the right amount of stripping for each side of the door, you just need to peel off the backing and firmly apply it to the moulding. It should stick after a few seconds.
Your second step is to install the door sweep. Measure the width of the door and cut the rubber door sweep to match this amount. If it’s not long enough, you’ll still have drafty doors, but if it is too long the door won’t close properly. You can attach the door sweep by closing the door and then screwing the sweep onto the door. The most important thing about this step is to make sure that the bottom of the sweep makes contact with the floor.
